Felting Classes

Come to the Studio on Saturdays, to play.   

You will learn a felting technique, explore color, and enjoy a homemade lunch on a Saturday.

 

The Alpaca Fiber Studio has the largest offering of felting classes, for all different skill levels, in Northeast Ohio.  Start with one of the beginning classes.  You are encouraged to make mistakes, and see what you can make intuitively.  What we really teach, is the opportunity for you to find your creative self and express it.

We have created new classes to ignite your creative self.  Start with our beginner class to learn the basic concept of how we create nuno felt.  Then jump into anyone of the many classes we have at the Studio this winter.   

Plan ahead and prepare to rediscover how to play with fiber art.  We will revisit those design elements we learn in elementary art class...all those years ago.

Customers who have been taking classes at the Studio will find these new class to further challenge what they know.  We will continue our study of new techniques in felt, and experiment with embellishments.  You will be pleasantly surprised at how quickly you will take your work up to that next level.

Vest class

Sat Oct 31 10:30-3 $95 

You will learn how to make a large fabric for a vest using fiber and silk.  You will also learn shortcut secrets on how to shorten rolling time. This intermediate class will call upon your felting experience for troubleshoot common felting challenges to make those larger pieces of nuno felt.  

You will fit the armholes and pin them to sew.  Sewing machine will be available.   This is a small class since you will be standing and working on a large table. 


Supplies you will need to bring:

Bubble wrap (small bubble) 48x110 inches.  I have this for rent ($5) at the studio.

Clear plastic (.7 mil) 110x110 inches  (cut ahead of time, it’s a real time saver)

5-7 pantyhose legs

Pool noodle full length         

2 old towels

Nuno Felted Scarf -Full

November 1 Daylight Savings Time Begins Sunday 

11-1pm $25 includes fiber/silk

This is my beginning class to learn felting.  Each student is asked to start here.  In this Beginner class, you will learn how to needle felt, then wet felt.  Finished scarf is 7x70inch scarf.  Lunch is included.

Nuno Felted Scarf for Cuyahoga Spinners & Weavers

November 21 Saturday 10:30-1pm $25 includes fiber/silk

In this Beginner class, each person will learn the basics of nuno felting by learning how to needle felt, then wet felt fiber onto silk.  This class is being tailored to those who have an elite understanding of fiber.  

Finished scarf is 7x70inch scarf.  Lunch is included.

Nuno Felted Scarf for Kim's Felted Soap Friends 

November 22 Sunday 10:30-1pm $25 includes fiber/silk

Kim started to teach felting by holding a felted soap class at her home.  This class is being tailored to her friends who want to go beyond felting and learn Nuno Felt.  In this Beginner class, you will learn how to needle felt, then wet felt fiber onto silk.

December 4 5-8pm  

Bring a favorite current project, a show and tell, and/or a really good desert to share.  Come share the creative energy at the Studio, on a Friday night.  


There will be like minded fiber enthusiasts of all kinds that come together to eat, drink, laugh and create.  Come join us.

Trellis Scarf  

Jan 16 Sat 10:30-2:30   $55 includes fiber

Come to this intermediate class and make a simple lattice felted scarf.  You will work in a linear, symmetrical, grid fashion and add a juxtaposition of asymmetric work to your design talents.  Finished felted scarf is approximately 10” by 60”.  Lunch included.

Organic Scarflette

Jan 23 Saturday 10:30-2 $65 Fiber included

You will learn the latest felting technique to make this dramatic wearable art piece.  Originally designed by Chad Alice Hagan, we will learn to work the traditional method of making felt.  This piece needs to be finished at home, so we will demonstrate that last step.  Finished piece is 10x50. 


Supplies you will want to bring.  

1 gallon bucket.  

2 old towels, 

sketchbook pencil, sharp scissors.

Embellish Nuno Felt  

Feb 6 Sat 10:30-2 $65 includes silk, fiber, & embellishments

Come jump into the world of embellishing with silk and wool fibers!  It is one more step to creating work that begins to have a sophisticated look to it.  You will learn about the many types of silk and wool fibers available and how to use them embellishing your Nuno Felt.  We will start by learning to shingle a nuno felt scarf approximately 8”x70”.  Then, you will begin a wonderful journey to experiment making textures with by incorporating  a variety of types of embellishments…silk throwsters waste, sari silk thrumbs, silk hankies, yarn, sari silk, bamboo, nepps. Here is where we begin to work on composition.   We will not be using an embellisher machine, just our imagination.  Come open your creative soul. 

Lunch included.

This is a fun beginning nuno felt scarf class that can be substitute for the Beginning Nuno scarf class.  You will learn the basic mechanics of how to nuno felt by first needle felting your design into place.  Then you will learn how to wet felt.  Finished piece is 9x70 round.  Lunch included.


Supplies you will want to bring:

This class is being offered as a Play Date for members of the Cleveland Museum of Art Textile Art Alliance.  In this Beginner class, you will learn how to create Nuno Felt.  

We will needle felt, then wet felt fiber onto silk.

Seaweed Nuno Felt Scarf 

Feb 13 Sat 10:30-1:30 $55 Includes fiber/silk

You will cut the sides of the scarf into flat blades that resemble tentacles.  These blades  give the scarf great action and movement.  You will also learn how to cut holes in your piece to give it a coral-like look.  Come to the Studio and think vacation, spring, and sunshine!!!   Finished piece is 20x60.  Lunch is included.

This class is a pleasant introduction to an advanced, complicated nuno felt technique.  Come learn our secrets to simplifying  the seamless technique, in making a fabulous wearable art piece.  Quite unique!  You will make dreadlochs to finish the piece.  Some felting experience is helpful.  Finished piece is approximately 24x24.  Lunch is included.

Come spend a cold winter day challenging your creative self.  In this face paced class, you will work in several different techniques, combining them one piece.  You will make tunnels, ruffles, volcanoes, and dreadlocks.  Spend a snowy winter day among other felting friends.  Felting experience is helpful.  Finished piece is 14x60.  Lunch included.

In this exciting class you will learn how to add exciting, unique texture to your work.  You will embed inclusions in different shapes giving your scarf unique relief textures.  You will learn how to cut out circles in your nuno felt.  Very dramatic! Finished scarf is approximately 8” by 70”  Lunch is included.

Ruffle Nuno Felt Scarflette 

March 19 Sat 10:30-2  $55 includes fiber/silk

There are so many ways to make ruffles, but this is quite a unique technique!  Come have fun learning the latest secrets in today’s Nuno Felt.  You will learn to use embellishments to take your nuno felt work up to a new level. We will also make deadlocks.   This scarf is full of drama, texture, and color.  Finished scarf is approximately 12”x60”. Lunch is included.

Pool Noodle 24”, 

old flat twin bed sheet,

If you are looking  to get a group of friends together for a Birthday, Monthly Girls Get-together?  Don’t hesitate to schedule a private class at the Studio in Chagrin Falls.  

For and small fee, I can include all supplies to be used for class so you don’t need to bring anything except your imagination.  Minimum 8 people. 

 

 

 

Workshop/Class Notations….

 

Workshops need to be paid in advance.  This is done when you register.

I will be happy to let you know if space is avavilible.  

Don't hesitate to ask to be put onto a waiting list for any of the "full" classes.  Often I open new classes if I know there is enough interest. 

Registration is not done on-line. 

Supplies.  If you don’t bring all your supplies, not to worry.  I have them available for sale the day of class.  Foam cushion $6, Felting needle $3, Pool noodle $4, cut noodle $2.  Re-purposed bubble wrap and repurposed plastic depends on the size of you project ($6-$15).

Come early to get set up and select your kit.  We start on time so we can attempt to end on time.

Cut your plastic and bubble wrap to size, at home.  It is a real time saver!

Cancellations 7 days in advance, I am happy to reschedule you to another class.  Kits are hand dyed, packaged, and tables set up 6-7 days in advance.  Cancellations that need to be made within 5 days, you are welcome to stop in and pick up your kit, but no class refund.  Thank you for your understanding.

Lunch is typically served with each class.   It is dairy free and homemade by husband Rob.  Please don’t hesitate to compliment him.  Men need that, you know!

Out of town guests might find comfortable lodging at The Inn of Chagrin Falls, 87 W Orange Street, Chagrin Falls, Oh  44022, ask for Beth Skeel.  It is next door to Gameskeepers & Lemon Falls, both yummy restaurants.  Just down the street is Starbucks, and 1/2 mile to Alpaca Fiber Studio.  

Chagrin Falls is a quaint village with a New England flair.
